At least three sightings of loggerhead sea turtle Caretta carreta have been reported over the last two weeks on the main beach Quebra Canela in the capital of Cape Verde. These turtles migrate to Cape Verde every year for nesting with the main beaches in Boa Vista, Sal, Santiago, Maio, Fogo, S.Vincente islands.
Directorate General of Environment in collaboration with the Maritime and National Police are responsible for the monitoring to ensure that turtles are not captured since these animals are protected under the national law since 1987. This species is also classified as Vulnerable to extinction by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
